Are you an ambitious Planner looking to gain new experience and develop your skills? If so, this may be the opportunity for you!
We are aiming to appoint a planner with experience who is either chartered or working towards becoming chartered. However, as an organisation we are keen to develop your skills and welcome applications from those with a range of levels of experience.
Here at Kirklees Council, we pride ourselves on being able to develop the very best talent we can find. In addition to a rewarding role, we offer a range of attractive benefits including flexible/hybrid working, generous holiday entitlements, access to the local government pension scheme, access to our employee health care and opportunities for personal development.
The Kirklees Local Plan sets ambitious housing and employment targets. We know we need to deliver new homes and jobs to create the communities of the future and further our potential within the Leeds City Region whilst ensuring the creation of high-quality places. Simultaneously, we need to address the challenges relating to climate change and support the implementation of our ambitious programme for the regeneration of our town centres.
You will work in our Development Management team, joining our proactive, dynamic and friendly team. The work is varied, working with a wide range of services and partners to deliver the Council’s ambitions for Kirklees, including supporting our exciting regeneration plans for Huddersfield and Dewsbury.

Ideally, you will already have a degree in planning or related subject or experience in the field as well as some experience of dealing with a caseload of planning applications and planning processes. You will be responsible for the processing of planning, advertisement consents, listed building applications and other planning matters, undertaking site inspections and consultations within agreed targets, timescales and priorities.
You will respond to enquiries from applicants, agents and developers, advising on planning and related permissions and the procedures. You will also discuss, consult and negotiate on proposals; prepare reports and formulate recommendations on planning applications. You will be required to travel independently across the district to satisfy the duties of the post and a current driving licence is therefore desirable.
If you want to develop, we have great opportunities to further your skills and experience across all types of planning applications and enquiries as part of this career-graded post.
We are proud of our University town, Huddersfield, stunning Pennine countryside and diverse towns and villages ranging from the historic mill town of Dewsbury to Holmfirth at the edge of the Peak District. At the heart of the Leeds City Region, we are actively working with partners to deliver a wide range of place making and transport opportunities allowing further opportunities to use and develop your skills.
